In 1631 Nikolaus Hannamann was mentioned as the first pharmacist in Münchberg. His pharmacy was probably located in a building below the town hall. When Christian Reuther took over the pharmacy in 1672 the location was confirmed. In 1690 he bought the house across the way on Ludwigstraße and moved his pharmacy there. His successor, Daniel Gottfried, was also one of four mayors at the same time, who alternated the office quarterly. His pharmacist’s license was confirmed in 1720, so that no secondary pharmacy could be established in Münchberg. It was forbidden for other citizens to deal with goods that the pharmacist handled. The famous chemist, Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner, began his pharmacy apprenticeship here under Christian Ernst Friedrich Lotz in 1794. After he traveled intermittently he returned to the city pharmacy in 1802 and worked with Lotz as a chemist’s assistant.

With the great city fire of August 12, 1837, nearly the entire upper city was burnt to ashes, including the city pharmacy. The lower bordering neighbor building, the Royal District Court, also burned down. After this great fire, different possibilities were discussed as to where they could rebuild the district court and the revenue office on Hofer Straße, which had also been destroyed. It was finally decided by the Ministry of the Interior in 1838 to rebuild both offices in their old locations. However, the Royal District Court had to be enlarged. Therefore, the pharmacy’s land was bought in addition. In return, the pharmacist Barth could build his new pharmacy at Ludwigstraße 28, since he preserved the scene of the fire there for master bricklayer Kraus.

Hermann Jaeger was called the “railway pharmacist”. His interests were in locomotive construction and the railroad. In spite of that he entered the pharmaceutical field and studied in Erlangen. He was the first military pharmacist in Bayreuth and took over the city pharmacy in Münchberg in 1895. His grandson, Dr. Ferdinand Strasser, took over the pharmacy on Ludwigstraße in 1953 as his successor. In the meantime, the city center had been relocated from the upper to the lower city and there was a second pharmacy in Münchberg from 1949. Therefore, Dr. Strasser decided to change locations for economic reasons, and so the city pharmacy was located on the corner of Bayreuther Straße and Bahnhofstraße on November 11, 1953. His son Ferdinand runs it today.

You can find further information about the pharmacies in Band 3 zur Stadtgeschichte „Das Gesundheitswesen der Stadt Münchberg von den Anfängen bis 1972“(volume 3 of the city history “The Healthcare of the City of Münchberg from the Beginnings until 1972”).
